Seven stockings hang in a row, each one with a name stitched on top. Only one of them says hers. A chubby dark seal-brown wizard cat in a pink star hat reads the names carefully and decides they all say hers.
She climbs up while the house is asleep and pulls them down one by one. Treats, toys, a little candy, a gift card: all hauled to her secret spot under the bed. By sunrise the mantel is bare and she is purring on a pile of loot. STOCKED.
